Common breeding sites for pests

Common breeding sites for household pests

IWESCO offers contract cleaning and waste control services, but we also have a highly-trained team of pest control specialists. We use environmentally-friendly pesticides that do not cause any harm to humans or the environment. These pesticides are approved by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and meet the requirements of the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

One of the key components of successful pest eradication and long-term results is to understand the breeding habits of the pests. There are a number of conditions that can contribute to infestations and out-of-control breeding grounds. Our pest control team knows how to identify breeding sites and tackle the problem at the source.

We can swiftly and effectively deal with your infestation of cockroaches, termites, bed bugs, rats or any other pest that threatens your health. There are many benefits of pest eradication to individuals and businesses, such as safeguarding assets and stocks which can be eaten, preventing health risks, maintaining hygiene and cleanliness, as well as peace of mind for you and your family or customers.

Breeding sites for pests

Here are some conditions to look out for when trying to prevent a pest infestation at home or at work:

  • Rats and mice - Rodents need access to food, water and shelter. Any location that has all three of these conditions can become a potential breeding ground. To prevent breeding, tidy all spaces inside and outside to limit the access to shelter. Remove all litter and waste bins that could hold food scraps for rodents.

  • Cockroaches - Cockroaches are not necessarily a sign of a dirty home or office. They are simply attracted to any location where there is food. Cockroaches will eat anything, from scrap foods and animal matter to paper and plastic packaging. Their ideal breeding site is any place that is warm and undisturbed. To get rid of cockroaches, remove any accessible food sources and clean your cupboards and exterior drains regularly.

  • Flies - Flies have a wide range of breeding sites, from open bins and animal faeces to drains and lawn clippings. They prefer warm climates with access to an abundance of food for their maggots. To minimise fly breeding sites, close all bins, drains and waste containers. Remove animal waste and compost from the property. Ensure that your drains are kept clean and remove any potential source of food.

  • Bed bugs - Bed bugs can breed on any surface with cracks and crevices, not only mattresses. They can find gaps in floorboards and cracks between the wall and floor. To prevent a bed bug infestation, seal and cracks and gaps in your room. Steam clean your mattress regularly and wash your clothes when you return from a holiday to prevent stowaways from breeding in your home.

  • Mosquitoes - Mosquitoes love to breed in still water where their larvae can feed and grow undisturbed. To get rid of potential breeding sites, search your premises for any standing water and empty it out. Looks for pots, pipes and open containers that can catch water. Ensure that your pool or pond is filtered and cleaned often.

  • Termites and ants - Termites like areas that are dark, damp and sheltered. Moist soil and rotting wood are perfect breeding sites for these pests. Similarly, ants like shelter and often breed in cracks and holes in the wall. To rid your property of termites and ants, remove any stored wood and seal all cracks and holes where these pests are visible.

These are simple steps to take to ensure that your home or office do not become breeding grounds for pests. Prevention is the best form of eradication. However, if you do encounter a pest infestation, consider using a professional pest control service to protect your property.
