How to keep your office free from pests

How to keep your office free from pests

No matter how clean your office environment is, you may encounter pests at some stage. Once these bugs or rodents settle in, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of them. Pests will make a home in any space that offers food, water and shelter. Workspaces are often prone to pest infestations when these three elements are present.

IWESCO offers professional pest control services that use environmentally-friendly techniques for long-lasting results. These services will help to protect your company’s reputation and ensure that your staff and customers are comfortable in your offices. Even the cleanest of work environments can attract cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes, spiders and rats, so every effort needs to be made in order to keep your office free from pests.

How to keep pests out of your office

If your workspace has a canteen or kitchen, ensure that all food is stored in sealed containers, preferably in a fridge. Make it company policy that no food be left out on tables, desks or countertops unless being eaten by staff members at that time. Any crumbs and spillages should be swept up and cleaned immediately to prevent ants and cockroaches from finding food scraps on the floors or surfaces.

Identify the problem areas of your office. The kitchen is an obvious hotspot for pests, but some can make their way into storerooms, closets, bathrooms and any other space where they feel sheltered. Any room that has access to a dustbin can also become a potential home for pests. Once you have identified problem areas, you can take measures to keep pests out for good.

Have a proper cleaning schedule for your cleaning staff to follow. This includes the following checklist:

  • Empty all rubbish bins at the end of the day. This is especially important if there are food scraps in the bin.

  • Dust your office regularly. This will remove any allergens and dust mites. Be sure to remove cobwebs while you’re at it.

  • Clean the fridge at least once a month, but ideally, once every two weeks if food is left in there for long periods of time. Throw out any food older than two weeks or that has passed its expiry date.

  • Remove clutter off the desks and get your employees to dust their workspaces once a week.

  • Remember to sanitise regularly-touched objects, such as door handles, telephones, keyboards and countertops. This will help to keep pests at bay too.

A clean office is vital for employee and customer satisfaction, but it also reduces the chances of pests moving in. However, an office needs to stay clean constantly for this to be effective. This requires input from all employees, not just the cleaning staff. Another good company policy to have is a 30-minute clean-up every Friday afternoon, just before employees go home for the weekend.

This will ensure that no pests move in over the weekend and discover a warm home with food and shelter. If these simple steps seem time-consuming, consider using our pest control services. Contact us today to get a quote or to set up an obligation-free assessment of your pest problem.
