Three weekly steps for a clean and healthy indoor space

Three weekly steps for a clean and healthy indoor space

A healthy home is a happy home. The best way to achieve this is to ensure that it remains clean, sanitised and organised. These three processes will keep pests, germs and other potential health hazards at bay. Every week, you should aim to do at least one task from each of the three processes, giving you three weekly steps for a clean and healthy home.

The three processes can be defined as follows:

  1. Cleaning - the process of removing dust, dirt, stains and marks from surfaces, floors, carpets and objects around the house.

  2. Sanitising - using particular chemical agents or alcohol-based cleaners to kill bacteria, viruses and disease-causing microorganisms from objects.

  3. Organising - using a systematic method to re-order and declutter a room or space by throwing away waste and putting objects in an orderly place.

Three weekly steps for a clean home

By doing a combination of these three processes at least once a week, you can maintain a beautiful living space and protect your loved ones from health hazards. Here are some activities that you can do on the weekends or in the evenings after work.

Week 1:

  • Cleaning - Choose one room and spend an hour cleaning it. This can include, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces.

  • Sanitising - Use disinfectant wipes and rub high-touch objects and surfaces in the chosen room.

  • Organising - Try the fives challenge; find five items to throw away, five to donate and five to return to their proper place in your house.

Week 2:

  • Cleaning - Dust all desks, tables, cabinet surfaces and picture frames in your house. This includes objects on top of these surfaces.

  • Sanitising - Get an alcohol-based spray and disinfect your phones, television remotes, computer, laptop, mouse, keyboard and other electronic devices.

  • Organising - Arrange objects in your cupboards according to how often you use them. The things you use every day should be at the front and easy to reach.

Week 3:

  • Cleaning - Tackle tough stains that have been present for a long time. This may be a carpet stain, lime deposits on your windows, a stain from a leaking tap or a scuff mark on a wall.

  • Sanitising - Disinfect all kitchen surfaces, chopping boards and cutlery. Anything that is used to prepare or eat food needs to be sanitised and rinsed thoroughly.

  • Organising - Spend some time folding things properly, including clothing, linen, towels and kitchen cloths. Even if these are hidden in a cupboard, you can make sure that they are neat and ready to be used at any time.

Week 4:

  • Cleaning - Wash your rugs and curtains. These household items get used every day but rarely get cleaned, so put them in the washing machine and hang them out to dry for the day.

  • Sanitising - Make your own disinfectant solution by mixing the right amount of Dettol with a litre of water. This can be used to disinfect wounds or various surfaces around the home.

  • Organising - Clear away clutter on your bedside tables, coffee tables, cabinet tops and kitchen counter. If it is not decorative or add value to a room, hide it away.

Week 5:

  • Cleaning - Wet your balcony or verandah and scrub it down with a thick-bristled broom. If you have a high-pressure washer, use this on outdoor paving or brick driveways.

  • Sanitising - Use disposable paper towels when disinfecting surfaces, rather than absorbent cloths. This is a more effective way to get rid of germs and bacteria.

  • Organising - Tackle loose papers around your house. Any official papers should be filed away and any papers that won't be needed again should be recycled. For sentimental cards and papers that hold memories, place these in a shoebox and store it in a cupboard.
